Modern commentary on media influence has grown predictably hysterical. For decades, TV pundits, armchair psychologists, and online experts have insisted violent video games turn teenagers into killers.
But is that grim appraisal true?
It turns out the answer is “no.” Watch author Hilary Layne dismantle that zombie meme in her recent video:
As Layne shows, the so-called causal link is a cultural mirage. Muckraking journalists conspired to convince the public that exposure to digital carnage produced IRL mayhem. No rigorous study ever substantiated the claim. Playing Doom or Call of Duty will not make you a school shooter. Human behavior is far too complex for such reductive reasoning to hold.
